The American Legion is seeking visual creators who can produce photography and video content to help tell those stories on all American Legion media platforms.

We are looking for creatives with a journalistic approach to shooting and editing camera footage. Professional knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere are a must, working knowledge of After Effects and other Adobe tools, DAM asset management systems and drone pilot experience is a bonus. We work primarily with Sony equipment and Apple computers, and we update our gear regularly.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

A multimedia creator who will be responsible for capturing, editing, producing and managing photo and video content as well as promotion and effective repurposing of journalistic material into marketing assets for The American Legion National Headquarters, indexing those assets online, elevating them for maximum visitation and delivering to audiences through all relevant media channels, internal and external.

Must have thorough professional knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere. Working knowledge of After Effects and other Adobe tools, familiarity with DAM asset management systems, an understanding of social media platform management and drone pilot experience are desired.

Content producer should display strong attention to detail, disciplined time-management skills and the ability to multi-task. The producer should be capable of working independently as well as with volunteers and staff from other divisions when on assignment. Must be available to travel, sometimes for extended periods of more than a week, especially from mid-July through Labor Day.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The employee will

  1. Create photo and video content, as assigned, for publication on all American Legion media platforms. Content includes, but is not limited to: deadline news coverage, magazine short-form documentaries, podcast episodes and promotions, social media content, public service announcements for radio and television, brand-identity media, membership promotions, training media and creative materials in support of meetings and events.
  2. Collaborate with marketing team, agencies and freelancers, including performing post-production and editing of submitted content.
  3. Maintain standard operating procedures for management of raw video content, and maintain photo archiving database, with consistent file uploads, population of metadata and accurate cataloging of assets.
  4. Assist with maintenance of studio, editing suite and all staff photo and video equipment
  5. Fulfill and maintain, with direction from Visual Media Manager and staff, American Legion national YouTube, Vimeo and social media platforms.
  6. Strategize, develop, manage and maintain an online catalog of American Legion photo and video assets for various audiences.
  7. Assist with set-up and camera operations during meetings and streaming events, as assigned, which includes availability or travel to selected annual events including, but not limited to, Washington Conference, National Oratorical Competition, American Legion Boys Nation, American Legion Baseball World Series, Legacy Run and Spring and Fall NEC meetings and National Convention to assist with photo and video coverage.

Reports directly to Visual Media Manager

Education/Technical Knowledge:

College education – four-year degree in video media, journalism, broadcasting, public relations or related field preferred, commensurate professional experience considered. Must demonstrate mastery of photo and video production, editing and content management.

Additional Skills Needed:

  • Understanding of The American Legion, military service and veterans
  • Strong working knowledge of digital photo and video equipment and contemporary practices
  • Mastery of non-linear editing platforms – preferably Adobe products – as well as high-level audio production skills and understanding of digital image archiving systems.
  • Must have good communication skills, including the ability to produce descriptions, titles, video or radio scripts, and short journalistic stories to accompany visual media assignments with accurate spelling, grammar and style.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and ability to work independently to complete assignments.
  • Ability to work with in a collaborative team environment to provide multifaceted event coverage.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality and accuracy standards as established by supervisors.
  • An understanding of the importance of consistent visual styles and branding.
  • Involves thinking imaginatively.

Additional preferred skills

  • High proficiency with cinema camera systems – specifically the Sony FS7 and Sony FS5.
  • Understanding of studio and on-location lighting, both natural and supplemental.
  • Understanding of audio capture and editing
  • Understanding of live-stream environments, including set-up, operation and tear-down.
  • Understanding of podcast post-production.
  • Drone pilot experience

Physical Factors and Working Conditions:

When not traveling on assignments, the employee will work in an office environment that is well-lit and air-conditioned. Involves lifting of materials up to 50 lbs. Duty at National Convention, ALWS, Legacy Run and Boys Nation require long hours and temporary adjustments to working conditions. Travel to conferences, high-profile American Legion events and general assignments is required. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus, either corrected or uncorrected.
