Mental Performance Coach

NJ/NY Gotham FC (“Gotham FC” or “the Club”) is a National Women’s Soccer League (“NWSL”) team representing New Jersey and New York. The team plays at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ.

The Role:

The Mental Performance Coach is a full-time in-person role responsible for helping both individual elite performers and the soccer operations organization at Gotham FC enhance communication, build resilience, and optimize performance under pressure.This role reports to the Director of Player Health & Performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing communication and cohesion between coaches, players, and support staff in order to enhance effectiveness.
  • Help design and implement strategies to facilitate behaviors both individually and collectively that drive the desired culture.
  • Provide real-time evaluation and feedback to the organization and individuals on areas for growth pertaining to interpersonal skills, effective communication, cohesion, and collaboration.
  • Facilitate both group and one-on-one training to aid in optimizing the performance of individuals and the team collectively.
  • Assists with providing techniques to mitigate barriers to performance that arise from various stressors including: Anxiety, Self-talk, Environmental, Motivational style, Injury, and Team dynamics.
  • Provide psychological skills training in areas of mental focus, mindfulness, relaxation and visualization.
  • Assist the organization in the development of a positive and supportive environment in which players and staff can thrive (“culture”).
  • Triage mind health matters and provide appropriate referral to the Sports Psychologist when additional clinical psychology support is indicated.
  • Work collaboratively with the Sports Psychologist in areas of individual development where appropriate to do so.
  • Work collaboratively with medical, performance, and coaching staff to facilitate player development.
  • Provide holistic support during injury and the return to performance process.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or doctorate degree in the areas of sports science, psychology, or closely related field.
  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience as a Mental Performance Coach in an elite sport setting.

Capability & Other Characteristics:

  • Experience communicating and collaborating with coaches and other support staff in a multidisciplinary high-performance team.
  • Possesses a high level of acumen for balancing the confidentiality of players and staff while being effective in communicating between all stakeholders.
  • Excellent self-directed work ethic and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal, written, in-person and presentation communication skills.
  • Able and willing to work non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Able to travel for away games as required at the request of the Director of Player Health and Performance.
  • Current valid driver’s license. 
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States. 

Location: 

This position is fully in-person, based at Gotham FC’s soccer operations office and practice facility, located in Whippany, New Jersey. Ability to attend all home games and any mandatory events as well as away games, as necessary.  A willingness to travel for other business-related needs, as they arise. Ability to work at the team’s business operations office in Jersey City, New Jersey, as needed. Gotham FC requires its associates to live in its market, that is, within reasonable commuting distance of Gotham FC’s offices, practice facility and Red Bull Arena.

Salary range:  $120,000 - $150,000 annually
