Job Description

About Carbon Reform:

Carbon Reform is a rapidly growing climate tech company redefining how commercial buildings approach HVAC efficiency, air quality, and decarbonization. Our retrofit technology reduces CO₂, enhances indoor air quality, and slashes HVAC energy consumption—without compromising on occupant comfort or infrastructure limitations. We're on a mission to decarbonize the built environment, and we're seeking passionate individuals ready to make an impact.

Job Overview:

Carbon Reform is seeking a hands-on HVAC Controls Technician, Programmer, or Engineer to spearhead the innovation and onsite implementation of advanced control systems for our carbon capture technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, deployment, and optimization of control systems that ensure maximum operational efficiency and reliability of our proprietary carbon capture technology. Field service and travel to customer sites, including large commercial facilities and mechanical rooms, are included as part of the estimating, installation, and commissioning process handled within this position.

This role is ideal for someone with field experience working with HVAC controls, comfortable coordinating directly with contractors, troubleshooting installations in real-time, and configuring systems in commercial building environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deploy, install, and commission HVAC-integrated control systems in commercial buildings, including field wiring, sensor integration, and hands-on troubleshooting.
  • Design and develop control systems and automation solutions for HVAC-integrated carbon capture equipment, including programming and sourcing PLCs and other equipment for commercial building automation systems
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for control systems, including electrical schematics, control logic diagrams, and operating procedures.
  • Coordinate with external partners, including customers' facilities operators and controls contractors to integrate our systems with theirs, including programming and front-end graphics development across multiple platforms, languages and protocols.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize control systems in office and on field sites to improve equipment performance and energy efficiency.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and chemical engineers to integrate control systems with physical equipment design.
  • Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to communicate capabilities externally and cross functionally.
  • Implement data collection and monitoring systems to track key performance metrics and iterate on any updates or improvements, with remote software updates and physical hardware updates at customer locations as needed.
  • Develop and maintain communication protocols between local equipment devices, cloud infrastructure and BMS.
  • Lead and participate in field deployment, onsite installation, wiring, and commissioning of HVAC-integrated control systems.
  • Provide technical support for installed systems and train operational staff.

Qualifications:

Required

  • 4+ years of experience in commercial and/or industrial controls and automation in the HVAC environment
  • Experience installing and commissioning HVAC control systems in commercial or industrial buildings is a must
  • Comfortable working on job sites with contractors, facility managers, and field technicians
  • Expertise in PLC programming (Tridium, Niagra, BACnet, ModBus, RS-485)
  • Proficiency in C++, Python or similar programming languages
  • Proficiency in HMI/SCADA development and implementation
  • Strong understanding of industrial networking protocols (MSTP, EtherNet/IP, etc.)
  • Familiarity with sensor integration and data acquisition systems
  • Experience with AutoCAD/Solidworks Electrical or similar electrical design software
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Software Engineering, or related field
  • Field experience in mechanical contracting, HVAC startup/commissioning, or controls retrofits, and/or energy upgrades
  • Knowledge of carbon capture, air handling systems, fans, motors and PID controllers
  • Familiarity with IoT platforms and cloud connectivity
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements for industrial control systems
  • Previous experience in a startup environment and desire to be part of a growing team implementing novel technologies

Why Join Carbon Reform?
