Job Description

Job Purpose: Operates ETCOG GoBus transit vehicle to provide public transportation to passengers to local or distant points throughout Smith County.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: Requires minimum of 2 years professional driving and customer service experience; prefer experience in a public transportation setting; computer or tablet skills required; equivalent combinations of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.
  • Licensing Requirements: A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record required; CDL license preferred, not required; new Texas residents with a valid driver’s license from out of state will have 90 days from date of hire to obtain their Texas driver’s license.
  • Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the geographical region is required; ability to pass Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination and drug screening requirements; ability to pass required annual background screening to include MVR Driving Record, Criminal and Sex Offender check, and other contractual requirements to qualify for the Non-Emergency Medical Transportation program and/or additional contractual agreement requirements as determined by GoBus; knowledge of and the ability to use standard defensive driving techniques; ability to maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record according to established policies and procedures; ability to tell time and keep a timely schedule, ability to read and understand maps and time tables, determine directions and follow a mapped route; ability to utilize critical thinking skills to solve problems; ability to read, write and speak English required; bilingual in English and Spanish preferred; ability to maintain professionalism and provide excellent customer service for a diverse customer base; ability to operate mobile tablet and communicate via email and cell phone required.
  • Office Equipment and Software: Computer, cell phone, fax, copier, tablet, push to talk devices; Software: Microsoft Office, Outlook, Route Match, Ecolane.
  • Decision Making: Must follow established steps and procedures.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Internal customers at all levels; regular interaction with the general public.
  • Confidential and Sensitive Information: Access to customer names, addresses and telephone numbers.

Potentially Hazardous Condition: Driving throughout the East Texas region.

Environmental Conditions (noise, temperature extremes, etc.):

• Weather extremes and temperatures driving through the region - Monthly occurrence

• Noise from bus cab varying from road noise to passengers - Monthly occurrence

Physical Exertion:

• Sitting for extended periods of time – Hourly occurrence

• Twisting, pulling, pushing while loading clients in wheelchairs onto the lift and positioning them appropriately in the transit vehicle – Daily occurrence

• Bending, kneeling, squatting in order to securely fasten clients in wheelchairs to transit vehicle floor brackets – Daily occurrence

• Climbing up and down transit vehicle steps several times throughout the day to enter and exit the vehicle – Daily occurrence
