Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm; additional time as needed for after-school meetings and professional development

Spanish Language Teaching Philosophy:

We want our students to feel confident communicating in the Spanish language and to become lifelong language enthusiasts. At AOS, we strive to create a high-interest and supportive classroom environment. To that end, our classes are proficiency-oriented and acquisition-driven. As language coaches, our Spanish teachers develop our students' communicative abilities and foster skills that enable them to interact in a new language rather than focusing on a traditional grammar model. We want our students to take ownership, show their understanding, feel secure enough to take risks, and be curious and globally-minded about people and cultures .

Responsibilities:

  • Teach daily 6th-grade Spanish classes
  • Teach Spanish using acquisition-driven language instruction by providing comprehensible input and other language-rich experiences, including staying up-to-date on educational best practices
  • Utilize appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and materials that reflect an understanding of various learning styles
  • Create lesson plans and resources based on sound, research-based methods of instruction to meet the needs of students
  • Inspire an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures and diverse cultural perspectives
  • Collaborate with other Spanish teachers in the middle school to further develop and utilize vertically aligned Spanish curriculum
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of adolescent students
  • Conduct ongoing formal and informal assessment of student achievement
  • Implement classroom-management techniques that align with the school’s culture
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents and students through a variety of means, including face-to-face conversations, phone calls, emails, texts, and conferences
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the school community
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of students by teaching SEL lessons, facilitating team-building activities, providing executive function support, and actively monitoring study halls
  • Attend the annual grade-level class trip (typically three to four days)
  • Participate in school events and community service projects
  • Actively engage in a robust assortment of faculty professional development opportunities offered to AOS teachers
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Google Suite for Education productivity tools
  • Integrate technology into the curriculum to strengthen the teaching/learning process
  • Fulfill other duties as requested

Qualifications:

  • Actions and values that align with the AOS Mission
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Spanish, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Native or near-native fluency in both Spanish and English
  • Minimum three years of Spanish teaching experience; middle school experience in an independent school preferred
  • Experience using multiple pedagogical strategies to build and assess student skills and knowledge
  • Knowledge of research-based practices for effective middle school instruction and adolescent development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and love for working with middle school students with great energy, playfulness, and understanding
