Job Description

Shrub Oak International School is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Compensation: $30 - $35/hour, depending on experience

Job Summary:

The Educational Interpreter is a 12-month calendar year hourly position and is supervised and monitored by the Lead Educational Interpreter. The Educational Interpreter provides support for D/HH students based on their ITEP goals and/or diploma requirements in collaboration with the classroom teachers and other clinical team members. In addition, the Educational Interpreter will have a strong partnership with classroom faculty and clinical staff to support an individualized, evidence-based educational program considering each student's interests, strengths, and needs. The Educational Interpreter will provide communication access to D/HH students using ASL and signed English.

Position Type & Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-time and Part-time; weekdays, 8am-4pm
  • Please note: Holidays/school breaks may fall during regularly scheduled shifts. They are still workdays unless approved off by supervisor.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Provide communication access using ASL, signed/spoken English, and cultural mediation to ensure visual accessibility.
  • Participate in professional development for educational interpreters, including IEP involvement, AAC use, and specialized areas like deafblind education.
  • Advocate for additional services and accommodations for D/HH, deafblind, and DeafDisabled students as needed.
  • Attend collaboration meetings with educational and clinical staff to enhance accessibility and curriculum support.
  • Offer interpreting services in academic settings, meetings, and events, prioritizing educational content.
  • Prepare for interpreting by collaborating with colleagues and researching materials.
  • Communicate and document student progress with the transdisciplinary team and attend relevant meetings.
  • Set up and adapt materials, equipment, and assistive devices as directed, ensuring compliance with emergency protocols.
  • Serve as a language model for students, presenting content at an accessible language level.
  • Provide tutoring on content-specific vocabulary and essential concepts for students.
  • Support social development by teaching conversational signs to staff and peers.
  • Adhere to RID Code of Professional Conduct and EIPA Guidelines in decision-making and ethical practices.
  • Maintain confidentiality, sharing information only as necessary with the educational team.
  • Assist with general school safety and operations without interfering with interpreting duties.
  • Must complete TCIS crisis intervention training and remain current on all assigned trainings.

Requirements

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum 1 year interpreting experience with D/HH populations required; K-12 setting preferred.
  • Certificate from an accredited interpreter training program or equivalent experience with D/HH, deafblind, and DeafDisabled students preferred.
  • Completion of RID certification (written portion) or EIPA with a score of 3.5+ preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Fluency in ASL.
  • Strong verbal, written, and administrative skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and video platforms.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviors and de-escalate crises with training in TCIS.
  • Skilled in working with children and adolescents with autism, mental health conditions, and co-occurring diagnoses.

Physical Requirements/Demands:

A workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; work regularly requires sustained concentration. Standing for sustained periods of time, bending, stretching, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice.

Work Environment:

We are a boarding school located on a 127-acre campus. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces, mostly inside the classroom or educational environment. May include work within the residential setting. The building has 6 floors accessible by staircases and elevators.
