Job Description

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you will support individuals with intellectual disabilities in achieving their personal goals and navigating their day-to-day activities. You’ll be a trusted partner, offering assistance and guidance "side by side" to foster independence, inclusion, and self-confidence. This role requires patience, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to maintaining a supportive and positive environment.

Role and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Direct Assistance : Work alongside individuals, assisting them in daily activities, such as personal care, household tasks, and community engagement, while encouraging independence and self-reliance.
  • Embrace a Side-by-Side Mindset : Partner with individuals, allowing them to take the lead whenever possible and creating a supportive environment to help them build confidence in their abilities.
  • Support Personal Development : Assist with skill-building and encourage individuals to take steps towards their personal goals in areas such as employment, education, and socialization.
  • Promote Community Integration : Encourage community involvement, guiding individuals to explore, participate, and become active members of their communities while respecting their preferences and comfort levels.
  • Ensure Health and Safety : Maintain a safe and healthy environment for all, practicing standard safety protocols and responding promptly to any health or behavioral concerns.
  • Document Progress : Keep accurate records of daily activities, progress toward goals, and any relevant observations, using these to collaborate with team members on individualized support plans.

Program

  • Manage supports and services ensuring health and safety for 1 individual in a 24-hour 1:1 or 2:1 support setting
  • Attend individuals’ medical appointments as directed by the Program Specialist
  • Ensure the individual’s residences are safe, homelike, and reflect the individual’s preferences
  • Assist in the development of a team focused on supporting the individual
  • Complete scheduled cleaning tasks as applicable for the individual’s home
  • Communicate effectively with next shift at shift change for individual’s behavior and agenda
  • De-escalate individuals as needed to ensure health and safety for individual and community
  • Read the individual’s ISP and BSP and ensure understanding
  • Provide transportation to the individual in the community setting
  • Provide personal care and assistance with tasks of daily living as outlined in the individual’s ISP and BSP
  • Attend the Individual’s monthly Circle meetings as directed by the Program Specialist
  • Support individual appropriate relationships and communications
  • Support individual’s interests and partner with the supervising Program Specialist to find activities and volunteering opportunities for the individual

Administrative

Accurately record time worked in real time utilizing a phone application

Verify timecard as needed in a timely fashion

Complete required shift notes as instructed by Program Specialist immediately after end of shift

Participate in yearly training as instructed by Training Coordinator

Follow organizational policies and procedures

Qualifications:

  • Experience : Prior experience in caregiving, social work, or similar roles is beneficial but not required.
  • Mindset : A passion for a side-by-side approach, with the belief that each individual’s journey is unique and should be respected and empowered.
  • Skills : Strong communication, patience, empathy, and problem-solving skills.
  • Requirements : Ability to lift or assist individuals with physical support, flexibility to work various shifts, and a valid driver’s license if required for community-based activities.

Education and other requirements

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Valid driver’s license
